A PENTHOUSE BY THE SEA

A Penthouse by the sea

We were asked to develop a full refurbishment of a property located in one of the most distinguished residential areas in Sitges, Barcelona. Our team of architects in Sitges designed an exclusive attic composed by 220m2 of interior space plus a 90m2 terrace. Throughout the whole process we established an efficient dialog and pondered the needs of our clients. They wished to have a suitable home for social gatherings and to establish a special connection with the house outdoors.

The clients also requested us to design an office area on the upper part of the duplex since they would work from home. On the ground floor, we demolished the original partitions and opened the common spaces in order to take advantage of the natural light and the visuals towards the ecological reserve of Sitges. We opted for simple lines and wide spaces typical from the Mediterranean architecture. We selected furniture with the ability to define environments and their functions. We designed a unique terrace that during the evening becomes the belvedere framing the views of the city.

The original configuration of this property was incompatible with the new owner’s needs and habits. The rooms were disconnected and had no bond with the terrace, the space with greatest potential in the whole house. We decided to do a renovation that would enable us to entirely reconfigure the apartment. We decided to work with sharp perspectives and integrated spaces to create confortable areas for the living. We strived to emphasize the feeling of continuity all along the property.

We worked with special emphasis in the kitchen since our client wanted to integrate this area into the social circuit and link it with the terrace. The house had also to be prepared to receive plenty of invitees, so that’s why we assigned half of the main floor to guestrooms. At the same level we also featured the master suite with a private connection to the terrace. The terrace was entirely designed and equipped to enjoy, receive, share and live.

We moved the ladder and transformed it into a library. Besides its obvious functional sense, it brings within an emotional wink: climbing a library-ladder has a poetic meaning. We shared with the clients that knowledge can raise your soul. Next to the staircase, a vertical and sculptural handrail arises. The upper floor was exclusively dedicated to the owner’s study and working zone, connected to a second private terrace. We designed an intimate environment so the owners can pleasantly work from home.

The refurbishment also included a rigorous interior design project. Along with the owners, we carefully selected exclusive design furniture capable of reflecting their identity. We combined timeless classics with modern iconic pieces. Among the modern Hansgrohe faucets, Foscarini lamps, Nanimarquina textiles and Gandia Blasco exterior furniture. Between the classics, Florence Knoll furniture, Venetian lamps, Oluce lamps and the iconic Eames Chaise Lounge by Herman Miller.
