RENOVATION AND EXTENSION IN A MEDITERRANEAN VILLA

The RARDO-Architects studio has carried out the project for a reform and expansion of a home in Sant Pere de Ribes (Barcelona), adapting the old home to house a workshop and studio for a plastic artist. Originally built in the 90s, this house was conceived maintaining neoclassical lines, with a crowning on its second floor of Greek inspiration, which has been out of date for current times, and the interior spaces of the house needed to adapt to new functions. The proposal made by the architectural studio led by Gerardo Van Waalwijk also seeks to incorporate the impressive views of the Mediterranean Sea that open to the front of the house, by demolishing the upper volume of the house.

A complete reinvention of the building envelope was worked to modernize its exterior appearance, constructing a new coronation through a light steel and glass structure, replicating the round metal pillars to convey a sense of continuity with the rest of the existing building, generating a second floor space totally open and flooded with sun, which will house the studio for the artist.

In the rear area of the building the expansion is planned to accommodate the artist’s workshop. A two-storey high concrete block envelope is created, which is combined with the current floor, generating an interesting final shape, with a strong geometric character, which respects the main façade, allowing both elements to work almost independent, but connected via the existing staircase on the main property.

The interior reform part of the program proposed by the property, restating it so that most of the existing facilities of the old house can be used, reclaiming part of the original backyard for the house, closing the dining room and adding a fully equipped dressing room to service the master bedroom. The bathrooms and bedrooms are completely renovated, adding fitted wardrobes and custom furniture to improve the general level of the house.

The performance is completed with custom furniture made by a cabinetmaker, Urbatek porcelain tiles, Hansgrohe taps and Duravit toilets.
