A family house on a corner plot in La Plana | SITGES

Our architecture studio in Sitges, Barcelona, was asked to design a stunning contemporary residential house in the La Plana area of Sitges, very close to the Mediterranean Sea. This expansive 600 m² plot offers breathtaking views of the sea, the city, and Sitges old town, and features a gentle slope that made it an ideal site for a creative and modern architectural design.

The architectural team’s design strategy focused on integrating the natural landscape with the interior living spaces, creating a house that seamlessly blends into its surroundings while providing stunning panoramic views. The new volume was carefully planned with a series of mid-levels that rise gently from the ground, offering a combination of solid, opaque elements at the base that transition to more transparent volumes as they ascend. This clever design ensures that the home remains private from the street while providing an abundance of natural light and breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea and Sitges.

One of the most striking features of the design is its use of large concrete overhangs that protect the interior from excessive sunlight, allowing natural light to filter through while minimizing heat. The house is organized into two levels, with the lower floor dedicated to daytime areas such as the living room, dining area, and a kitchen, all of which open to outdoor terraces. The rooftop pool is a standout feature, offering an elevated, panoramic view of the surrounding area.

The guest room is strategically placed on the ground level for optimal privacy and ease of use, while still remaining accessible for visitors. Large landscaped terraces surround the house, creating outdoor spaces for relaxation and recreation, enhancing the relationship between the interior and exterior.

The house is designed to be a fortress-like retreat from the street, offering a sense of security and privacy. The exterior of the building is closed off from view, ensuring that the home remains secluded from any views. Inside, interior courtyards provide a connection to nature and light, flooding the lower floors with natural elements that bring the outdoors in.

The design of the house makes optimal use of the sloped site, which helps to minimize the cost of earth movement during construction. The terraced volume of the house steps down with the slope, creating an architecturally dynamic structure that integrates beautifully with its Sitges landscape.
